What is separation anxiety in dogs?

Put simply it is a panic attack. caused by family members leaving the house. Blind terrifying all encompassing terror which no amount of  treating, leaving the radio on or even getting another dog can help.  Separation anxiety in dogs is not rational and makes no real sense, but it is very real to the dog and the effects on the family and home can be terrible.  Uncontrolled defecation, damage to furniture and doors, self harm, howling loud enough to wake the street are all potential symptoms.

Separation Anxiety (SA) is widely acknowledged as being the most difficult behavioural issue to fix.

(SA) is widely acknowledged as being the most difficult behavioural issue to fix. Many trainers will not touch it. Not because they’re not qualified but because it is generally a long (months not weeks) process which is not sexy or exciting. The good news is we are specialists in this area. I am trained and certified by Julie Naismith’s SA PRO program. This is the world’s leading Separation Anxiety trainers program.

Un-treated separation anxiety in dogs normally ends in re-homing or in the worst cases euthanasia. This is a tragedy for all involved, Your dog is a 10 year plus family relationship which you should remember  for the rest of your life, His issues are your issues  and if he needs your support, then he needs your full support.

It’s not possible to say how long it will take to ‘fix’ your dog. What is possible, however, is to predict how long it will take for you to learn everything you need to be able to carry on training and supporting your dog without needing our help anymore.

Our core plan is a 6 week plan. In that time, we expect that you will make significant progress with your dog and that you will be ready to  ‘go it alone.’ If you feel you need further support after 6 weeks, then we offer 2 week blocks of training.

In all cases of Separation Anxiety, medication should be considered and it will be necessary in a significant number of cases.

It is important that owners understand how medication for separation anxiety works. Most importantly, you need to know that medication itself will never cure SA.  Only training and therapy can resolve SA but often, medication is needed to support this. If your dog has SA then she will most likely live her life with anxiety, not just when you go out.  This state of anxiety means that training can often be ineffective, as we just can’t ‘get through’ to the dog because she it stressed.

Anxiety meds will bring her down off the ceiling so that she can respond to the training we do with her. Medication for Separation Anxiety  can generally be taken long term and so can be used to support all the way through training. Depending on the meds prescribed, it can sometimes take 4-6 weeks for them to be fully effective. Treatment can’t start until after this time.  At the end of training, it is important that she is slowly weaned off the meds rather than just stopped quickly.

Only vets can prescribe medication for separation anxiety. It is quite common  however, for vets to have limited experience of SA. To support you, we can produce a report for your vet. The report will detail your dog’s SA issues along with any relevant history. We will explain why we believe  medication will be effective in supporting your dog and what medication we feel will be the most effective. The cost for this report is £65. If you proceed through to a package of SA therapy, the cost of the report will be deducted from your invoice.

How does it work…?

Over the last few years – especially since Covid19- the world of SA training has evolved massively. We have learned that not only is it possible to treat separation anxiety in dogs remotely, but it is also actually better than having a trainer in the house, changing the dynamic and changing the way your dog behaves.

The unique ‘Be Right Back’ App, developed by the team at SA PRO, gives you full control and visibility of your dog’s development.

Here’s what happens:

  • I do an initial Zoom assessment with you and your dog.
  • Out of the assessment I develop a training plan using the App.
  • You complete and record 4 training sessions a week and sent to me daily to review.
  • I load each day’s training onto the app based on the results of that day’s training.
  • We complete one training session together, via Zoom each week.
  • Your dog progresses over 6 weeks, building up successful alone time.

We aim that after 6 weeks, you and your dog have progressed enough to progress on your own.   If you need more support, you can book 2 week blocks of training.
